Not only does our area of North Carolina have spectacular Asheville Hikes and NC Bike Rides, we have some spectacular opportunities for whitewater rafting, tubing, searching for waterfalls and lakeside enjoyment. The Broad River and Green River flow very close to our Blue Ridge Parkway Motel and are very popular recreational rivers, and Lake Lure is touted as one of the most picturesque and enjoyable lakes in North Carolina.

Lake Lure has been described as one of the most beautiful manmade lakes in the world. Envisioned by Dr. Lucius B. Morse, Lake Lure was created in 1927 after the damming of the Rocky Broad River at Tumbling Shoals. Morse acquired thousands of acres around the lake and had the town of Lake Lure incorporated in 1927. In all, Lake Lure is approximately 720 acres with a shoreline of approximately 27 miles. This lake is a premier destination for boaters, swimmers and those just wanting to enjoy the scenic beauty. Take a tour of Lake Lure and learn about the unique history of the lake, the cultural history of Hickory Nut Gorge and local attractions and landmarks, including the site of the film Dirty Dancing. Take in miles of the gorgeous shoreline and listen to the numerous legends and tales from the special area. Lake Lure Tours is one of the most popular activities in the region.

If you’re interested in tubing or Whitewater Rafting in NC, both the Green River and the Rocky Broad River feature opportunities to get wet and enjoy the pristine North Carolina waters. For kayakers wanting to hit the river themselves, a popular put-in is along CR 2802 (Lower Flat Creek Road) in Bat Cave North Carolina. Kayakers and rafters can enjoy stretches of the Broad River all the way to the US 221 A bridge, before the Lake Lure dam. The first several miles of the Broad River take kayakers through a long, flat valley. The river then tumbles down two steep gorges, including Hickory Nut Gorge and flows past the towns of Bat Cave and Chimney Rock. There are also great stretches of whitewater south of the Lake Lure dam. Most of the rapids are found between the dam and the first river bridge at Uree. The Broad River then follows US 64/74 through a wooded and remote area to a good takeout location and is one of the best places to enjoy Whitewater Rafting In NC. Tubing is very popular on the Green River due to the lack of major rapids and serene, flowing current.

Because of the numerous rivers, streams and dynamic topography, our area is filled with breathtaking waterfalls. One of the most popular Waterfalls in Western NC is Hickory Nut Falls in Chimney Rock State Park. Hickory Nut Falls is a part of Falls Creek and plummets 400 feet to the gorge floor below, making it one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Take the Hickory Nut Falls Trail to a great view of the falls from its base. For the last 17 minutes of the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans, Chimney Rock State Park and Hickory Nut Falls are featured during the fight scene between Chingachgook and Magua on the brink of the falls. Other popular waterfalls in the area include Rainbow Falls, Camp Minnehaha Falls, The Cascades, Pool Creek Falls and Wolf Creek Falls.

Another very popular water attraction near Lake Lure and our Cabins for Rent in NC Mountains are the Bottomless Pools Chimney Rock NC. These three separate bottomless pools were created over thousands of years as water from the waterfalls carved out the sediment to incredible depths. Each of the three pools has its own waterfalls cascading into it. This unique area is located just off Hwy 64/74, across from Lake Lure Beach behind the Arcade Building.
